Having learned mah jongg from a friend and having played for about a year I was interested in brushing up on any rules I may have missed, etc. and learning a little more about strategy. I also have a friend who is just starting to play and wanted to see if this book could help.
It is an outstanding resource for both the new mah jongg player and the experienced. I and my mentor learned several new items and approaches and the new player has found it excellent.
It’s very well written and very clear in the way it lays things out. I definitely recommend it for anyone interested in playing American Mah Jongg.

This is an easy-to-read, easily understandable guide to playing American mah jongg. I bought it shortly after I attended my first mah jongg game, where all the other players had been playing for a decade -so I knew I had some catching up to do.
Aside from clear instructions and a mah jongg 101 sensibility, the author also provides great insight into strategy that has already served me well.
Overall, a terrific book – I’ve already purchased it for two other beginners I’ve recruited to play mah jongg with me!

This book was recommended by our teachers when we were learning the game of Mah Jongg. It is written clearly and is very easy to understand. We were to read the book, take the lessons and play the game a few times and then read the book again. The second reading put everything into place. I would highly recommend this book.

This book is just great in explaining how to play the American version of Mah Jongg. Very detailed from start to finish. It makes it so understandable if you just use your Mah Jongg tiles and follow along with the book. One of the better features of the book is that there are exercises to practice what you’ve just read as well as quizzes to make sure that you understand what you’ve just read. Once you get down the logistics of playing the game, the book then gets into strategy. If you can’t understand the game and feel comfortable playing after reading this book, I strongly suggest you find a different game to play.

Having bought a new Mah Jongg game set, I needed some help to quickly learn the game since my wife has been playing for a few months. I found this book to be extremely helpful. Within a couple days I was playing Mah Jongg with confidence. This book is well organized and extremely helpful. The chapter reviews and quizes make it easy to check your understanding of the material presented. It contains very clear illustrations and easy-to-read text. I also appreciated the bit of history about the game as well. I highly recommend this book to get you up and playing Mah Jongg very quickly.

This was a great book for me. My neighbor was teaching me how to play Mah Jongg and this little book was a big help. If you are a beginning player you can’t go wrong with this book.

I ordered this book for my mother, who is re-learning how to play the game. I also sent her another book, since this one wasn’t available at the time. She sent the first one back, but LOVES this one. She said that it is helping her more than her class is and that she plans to read it over and over. She is also going to recommend it to the ladies at her table. The only problem with it is that now my dad is mad at me because she is so busy with her book that he isn’t getting his dinner! (just kidding!)

If you know nothing about mah jongg, this is the book for you! Most of the book is spent describing how the game is played. If, like me, you’ve played the game maybe twice, and need help figuring out how to decide what section/hand to play, the exercises described in the book are particularly useful. They really improved my game right away! So if this is you, I highly recommend this book.
There was a very short chapter in the back that covers strategy. If you’ve played the game more than maybe four times, or if you’re looking for anything more advanced — including tips on strategy — you probably want a different book.

If I could I would give this Mah Jongg guide 10 stars! No one can believe that I learned to play from a book. I won the second game I ever played and this was against women who have been playing for 30 years!!!If it were not for the reviews that praised this book so highly, I would never have known to order it.

This is an excellent guide for beginners to Mah Jongg. It is very easy to understand, starts with the very basics and has good illustrations. This will be a reference book that I will refer to often especially if I don’t play regularly. It will be a good refresher course.

This is an excellent, comprehensive, easy to understand explanation of the game. A great resource especially for the new player. Book contains pictures and illustrations that are clear and helpful. Step by step instructions for organizing a hand, and play strategies. The book even contains a section on how to update an old set! Recommended!

This book is well written and easy to understand for a beginner who is overwhelmed with trying to remember so much information. I bring it with me when I’m playing Mah Jongg and can find answers easily to all our questions. I would recommend it highly.

Beginner’s Guide to American Mah Jongg is the only book I could find that met my needs as a novice player. The quiz at the end of each chapter spotlights the main points of the chapter. The copy of the National Mah Jongg League’s Card of Hands is a real bonus. Using it to practice all the possible hands for that year(2004),really helps to familiarize you with the types of hands for any other year. Also, I’m sure the exercises will result in cutting down the time my partners have to wait for me to figure out what I’m going to do. In addition, the book is a quick reference for looking up rules and strategies of the game.

Beginner’s Guide to American Mah Jongg: How to Play the Game & Win This is one of the best books I have seen on how- to- play anything! It gives complete and detailed instruction on mah-jongg as wells practice hands to make. It is written in everyday terminology and the illustrations are super. I highly recommend this book to anybody desiring to learn.

This book is terrific. Succinct and pretty comprehensive. You can begin from knowing absolutely nothing about the game and come to have a good feel for how to play. It’s one of the very few books with a good solid overview of the American method of playing. (Tom Sloper’s book is great, too, and a wonderful follow-up.) Other beginning players I know who have read it loved it and found it extremely useful. I’ve read it three times.

This book is fine, but it does not include an easy-to-find, easy-to-use scoring chart. Since that is what I really was looking for, I am less than happy with this book. I think ALL Mah Jongg books should have a scoring chart somewhere inside.

As someone whose only contact with mah jongg tiles was in playing Mahjong Solitaire (on the computer, of course), I was very curious as to how the actual game played. I started researching online some American mah jongg sets, and I realized that one complaint was constant no matter what site I was on: the instructions that came with the sets were confusing, or did not explain the game well enough.
And so I decided to read this book before venturing into the world of “cackling birds.”
First off, Elaine Sandberg does a great job in dumbing it down for us. She really tries her best in making this game as simple and clear as possible. But for those of you who are newbies like me, mah jongg just isn’t a simple game. It’s very complex with all sorts of mah jongg (the winning move) possibilities. Even after reading this book, I’m going to have to have a friend teach me how to play the American variant.
Sandberg starts off with the basics of the game, from explaining the tiles to setting up the first play, then moves in the direction that learners ought to go in: strategies and complexities at the very end.
It’s a great book to read if you’re wondering how to play the game. I feel that, after reading this, I have a much better understanding and deeper appreciation for mah jongg. Nevertheless, the best way to learn how to play it and develop strategies is, of course, by playing it over and over, just as with any other game.

I had no idea how to play mah jong. I had signed up for an adult education class and the day before it started I received a call that the class was cancelled. I was determined to learn mah jong. I bought this book and it gave me the help that I needed. My local library held mah jong games on Thursday and I thought I would give it a try. I couldn’t believe that on my first day I was actually able to play and I did win one game. I was so excited. This is a great book. I recommend it to everyone.
